5 Things You’ll Be Glad You Packed for Birth 🩷 🩵

Hospital-bag lists can make it seem like you're packing for a weeklong vacation. But for many uncomplicated births, the hospital stay is relatively short—and the hospital provides many of the basic postpartum supplies you'll need.

So skip the overstuffed suitcase. Bring the things that support you, your body and those first hours with your baby.

1. A Gown Designed for Birth
What you're wearing is one thing you'll use throughout labor, delivery and recovery. Choose something soft and comfortable that also allows access for monitoring and care, breastfeeding, and easy skin-to-skin.

Our pick, naturally, is the Skin to Skin Gown—because it was designed specifically around those moments. 💗💙

2. An Easy, Comfortable Outfit

Your body doesn't immediately return to its pre-pregnancy shape after delivery—and it shouldn't! Your belly will likely still look 6 or 7 months pregnant, and you may be swollen, tender and sore.

Pack a soft nursing tank or loose-fitting top along with roomy pajama pants or shorts with an easy waistband. Think easy on, easy off. After delivery, bending, pulling, twisting and even lifting your legs can be uncomfortable, especially after a C-section or a long labor.  This is not the time for tight leggings or complicated waistbands. Choose something soft, forgiving and easy to move in—and give your body plenty of room to recover.  Pack for the body that just gave birth.  It will thank you!

3. A Few Tiny Self-Care Items: Lip Balm + Electrolytes
Hospital air can feel dry, labor is work, and sometimes the smallest comforts are the ones you're happiest you remembered. Toss in your favorite lip balm and a few electrolyte packets. They take up almost no room.

4. One Comfort From Home
Not five blankets. Not your entire bedroom. 😂 Just one thing that makes the hospital feel a little more comfortable—a favorite pillow, soft blanket, or slippers.   If you're planning to breastfeed, a nursing pillow can also be worth the space—it can make those first feeding attempts much more comfortable while your body is sore.

5. Your Favorite Shower & Toiletry Essentials
That first shower after birth can feel amazing. Pack travel-size versions of the things that make you feel like yourself again: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, moisturizer, toothbrush and toothpaste.

And Here's What You Probably DON'T Need to Pack

Ask your hospital what they provide before filling your suitcase. Many hospitals provide postpartum basics such as mesh underwear, pads, cold packs, peri-care supplies and other recovery items.

Use them. And when your nurse tells you that you can take the remaining supplies home—take them. They're incredibly useful during those first few days of recovery.

Pack Less. Focus on More.

You don't need the perfect hospital bag to have a meaningful birth experience.

Your body is doing the important work.

Bring a few things that help you feel comfortable, cared for and prepared—and leave some room for everything you're bringing home. 💗💙
